NATIONAL CONTINGENT STILL ABLE TO ACHIEVE 40 GOLD MEDAL

Palembang, Indonesia – The Malaysian contingent on ASEAN University Games (AUG) 2014 is still on track to achieve its target of 40 gold medals at the 17th edition of which was held in Palembang.

Since the games began on 8 December, the contingent has won eight gold medals through the sport of wushu and karate curtain that had recently.

Chef-AUG 17th, Prof. Datuk Dr Abdullah Mohamad Said said, the opportunity to achieve the target because there are still events that offer plenty of medals is still in the preliminary round.

“I hope in the near future when the onset of sports, swimming, diving and archery, the contingent could collect more gold medals.

“We also see the martial arts, badminton and fencing as events that has the potential to achieve our target of medals (40 gold) that was created before leaving for Palembang,” he said yesterday.

AUG Games this time will be the focus when the onset of sports events on the day, followed by swimming (tomorrow) and falls on Wednesday.

Badminton event will start today, while the other two sports that have the potential of martial arts and fencing will begin tomorrow.

Abdullah also praised the excellent performance exhibited football team, karate and wushu showcasing promising action at the Games the second largest after the SEA Games.

“I also want to express my joy for football this afternoon we won 5-0 over Singapore and this entitles us to continue playing in the semi-finals.

“Karate event was over and won six gold success shows Malaysia has the potential to become the best country in the event of karate.

“Wushu has made a surprise second gold unexpectedly achieved through duilian event,” he explained.

Asked the contingent capability to defend the overall title was achieved in AUG 2012, Abdullah believes, all athletes have to work hard if they want to repeat that achievement in Laos.
