When Seconds Matter, Practice Is Power: ISN Sports Medicine Division Sharpens Emergency Response Skills

Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur | 10 June 2025 — In elite sport, the difference between full recovery and career-altering injury is often measured in heartbeats. With that urgency in mind, the Sports Medicine Division of Institut Sukan Negara (ISN) conducted a two-day Sports Emergency Workshop – Simulation Practice on 9–10 June 2025, bringing its entire clinical team together for an intensive refresher on pitch-side lifesaving skills.

Led by experienced sports physicians Dr Azril Syazwan and Dr Amir Azwan, the workshop combined interactive discussions with scenario-based simulation training—replicating high-pressure emergencies such as spinal trauma, concussion, and sudden cardiac events. These hands-on sessions allowed participants to rehearse and refine rapid-response protocols under realistic time constraints.

“Every second we save on the field translates to better outcomes in the treatment room,” said Dr Azril. “Simulation allows us to hard-wire systematic responses so we can act—rather than hesitate—when lives and careers are on the line.”

Workshop Objectives and Key Outcomes:

  1. Refresher on essential pitch-side emergency skills
  2. Ensure rapid, systematic, and effective responses to on-field emergencies
  3. Enhance preparedness through scenario-based, hands-on learning

Participants engaged in rotation-based drills using manikins and real-time medical scenarios to test coordination, communication, and decision-making in critical moments. Emphasis was placed on clear role delegation, efficient use of emergency kits, and maintaining athlete safety through every stage of intervention.

Dr Amir highlighted one important takeaway: “We found opportunities to improve how our team operates in real-time—simple adjustments, like strategic equipment placement or communication flow, can reduce response time and improve care quality.”

Commitment to Athlete Safety and High Performance

The workshop reflects ISN’s forward-thinking approach to sports healthcare—especially ahead of upcoming international events where Malaysian athletes will compete on the global stage.

ISN Director of Sports Medicine, Dr. Ahmad Munawwar Helmi bin Salim, commended the initiative:

“Our athletes push their limits every day, and it is our responsibility to match that commitment with uncompromising medical readiness. These drills are more than training—they’re a promise to our athletes that their safety is our highest priority.”
