Expert Lecture Explores Challenges of Growth Spurts in Young Athletes

ISN 2025 Lecture Series Kicks Off with World-Renowned Talent ID Specialists

Bukit Jalil, 21 May 2025 — The National Sports Institute of Malaysia (ISN) officially launched its 2025 Lecture Series with a compelling session titled “Dealing with the Growth Spurt of Young Athlete”, hosted at Perdana Hall, ISN. This high-impact event brought together leading international experts to address one of the most crucial developmental phases in youth sports.

The session featured Dr. Pieter Vansteenkiste, Chief Scientific Officer of Hylyght and Postdoctoral Researcher at Ghent University, Belgium, alongside Emeritus Prof. Dr. Johan Pion, a renowned expert in Talent Identification and Development, currently a guest professor at Ghent University and former Head of Department at HAN University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands.

Moderated by Suresh A/L Marathamuthu, Research Officer at ISN, the discussion provided critical insights into the biomechanical, psychological, and performance-related challenges that arise during adolescent growth spurts in young athletes.

The lecture highlighted scientific approaches to monitoring and managing athletic progression during puberty, with evidence-based strategies for coaches, sports scientists, and medical professionals. Emphasis was placed on long-term athlete development (LTAD) models that prioritize injury prevention, talent sustainability, and customized training interventions.

This initiative aligns with ISN’s strategic vision to integrate global knowledge into local practice, strengthening Malaysia’s high-performance sports development ecosystem in line with Visi Sukan Negara 2030.

The Lecture Series is part of ISN’s broader commitment under the PERFORM platform to foster a culture of continuous education, innovation, and applied research across all sporting levels.
