SPORTS SCIENCE EDUCATION SESSION FOR TERENGGANU SUKMA SEPAK TAKRAW ATHELTES

Terengganu – The Terengganu State Sports Council (MSNT) had organized a Sepak Takraw Athletes Identity Motivation Camp (SUKMA) XVII in Pulau Kapas, Marang, Terengganu. A total of 50 athletes which comprises of 30 male athletes and 20 female athletes as well as 4 MSNT staffs participated in this camp.

In order to make the event a success, NSI Terengganu Satellite Centre was invited to organize the programme of Sports Science Education to expose the athletes to Strength and Conditioning, Sports Psychology, Physiology and Sports Nutrition.

The main objective of this Motivation Camp is to strengthen the identity of the sepak takraw athletes in terms of spirituality, mentality and physicality in order to have them move towards the target that has been set, which is to bag two gold medals and one extra gold medal (bonus). PSISNT has structured an education session plan in relation to that as an extra programme for the athletes involved.

This Identity Motivation Camp started with physiology education session by Mr. Afiqi Afandi. He has touched on the aspect of Aerobic, Alactic Anaerobic and Lactic Anaerobic, natural movement in sepak takraw and the muscles used in this sport.

The second session was an education session focused on Sports Nutrition, presented by Miss Atiqah Jalila Jusoh. The athletes were given explanation about the basic of nutrition, to have them understand the nutritional impact on their health and also during training and competition.

Apart from having physical strength and being healthy, an athlete need to have mental strength as well to face every competition. Through a psychology session by Mrs. Rapida Saimi, the athletes were taught and guided to practice Imagery, Breathing and Self Talk.

The session continued with a strength and conditioning session with the head of PSISNT, Mr. Mohd Noruddin Abd Manaf. He provided them an understanding about the principles of physical training such as warming up and cooling down as guidelines needed by athletes to undergo effective training to achieve the target set.

It is hoped that through such programme, the sepak takraw athletes will be able to foster a stronger sense of identity and face challenges in embracing the target set.
